KITCH-ITI-KIPI (BIG SPRING) - PART OF A GREAT DAY

Currently in Manistique MI (Low 58 Dense Fog then Times of Clouds and Sun High 76)

Yesterday we had one of the great days; food, sightseeing, water, and new friends. Of course any day that starts with this lakefront view doesn't have to go very far to be great.

We started out with breakfast at a Big Boy which we haven't eaten at in a long time.

We then went to Kitch-iti-kipi or Big Spring in Palms Book State Park one of the UP's major tourist attractions. Kitch-iti-kipi is two hundred feet across and forty feet deep. Over 10,000 gallons per minute gush from many fissures in underlying limestone. The flow continues all year at a constant 45 degrees so the spring never freezes. The pond formed by the spring was stocked with lake trout which you can see from 'The Raft' that takes you over the many fissures. Here is the raft.

There is a cutout in the center where you can look at the clear water below and the fish.

The area is gorgeous and allows some great reflections.

Here is the output of the spring heading to Indian Lake with another great reflection.

We passed over the biggest fissure, aka 'The Big Spring'.

After the visit at an incredibly gorgeous area we headed back to the park and met a great couple out walking their dog. What started out as a question about what model our rig was turned into a long discussion. Rick and Nicole have been fulltiming for a year and really enjoy it. We exchanged contact information and hope to see them sometime down the road.

After our conversation with them we headed to Boot Lake Bar and Grill for the Friday night fish fry.

We had some of the best walleye, lake perch and whitefish we ever have had. We drove back to the park and ended the day with the same view we had this morning.

A great day for sure!!

Till next time,

Bob and Jo
