Celebrating our anniversary with great food and a hike to a falls

Yesterday, July 5th, was our 21st wedding anniversary and it is unbelievable how fast the years have flown by. We awoke to find the strangest bird at our bird feeder (as a reminder you can click on the photos below to enlarge them). We might need some help identifying this bird :-)

We certainly had better weather than we did on our wedding day. It was 105 degrees and the historic courthouse in Independence Missouri did not have air conditioning.

Food has always been a part of our lives as you can probably tell from our blog and yesterday was no exception. We finished off the loaf of cranberry wild rice bread that we bought at Sara's Table in Duluth and made french toast for breakfast. We then had a great lunch at the Angry Trout in Grand Marais and sat outside. Here is the view from our table.

Being fans of waterfalls we decided to visit one that is fairly close to our park, Hidden Falls in Cascade River State Park. We are saving High Falls near the Canadian border for a day with cooler temperatures as it was forecasted to be in the low 80s. Here is the start of the trail to Hidden Falls.

You are immediately along the Cascade River and you follow it all the way to the falls.

Here is another view of the river.

Here are the falls from the side.

We saw the most vibrant colored toadstool that we have ever seen along the way.

And exposed tree roots like we have never seen and planking to help you over the crevices.

After almost a mile hike we arrived at the falls. It was cool to hear and see the water all along the trail.

Once we were done hiking it was time for more food. We stopped at Sydney's Frozen Custard and ordered a pizza for supper and had custard while we were waiting. We then went back to the park and rested from our hike. The temperature at the park was 68 degrees while the official temperature taken up the hill from the town was 85, the benefit of being so close to the lake. While we were resting though the wind shifted and it hit 81 in a few moments but then back to 68 very quickly.

Some of the most bizarre weather moments we have ever had in 21 years of marriage has been the drastic temperature fluctuations here in Grand Marais Minnesota.

Till next time,

Bob and Jo

  1. Happy Anniversary you guys. Our wedding day was so hot and sticky in VA that I thought we were all going to melt. At least Todd and Michaela's wedding was just hot, not too humid. Wishing you another 100 more anniversaries.

  2. Kind of looks like a double breasted pot belly bird to me. :)

    Happy Anniversary to you both!
