Change of Plans

We have a change of plans, instead of coming through tornado alley (TX-OK-KS) to the Kansas City area in what is projected to be the worst tornado season in a number of years we are heading straight north from the Phoenix area into Utah, Idaho and across Montana and North Dakota and then up into Canada for Bob's fishing trip in mid-June. We know we still have a chance for tornadoes but going from tornado alley where it is almost guaranteed to a chance seemed like a good idea, plus we get to see parts of the country we have never seen. We also know that we may see cooler temperatures and maybe some snow but that is much better than tornadoes. We "plan" to be in the KC area in mid-September for about a month. We love the full-timing lifestyle and plan to do it as long as we are able but we have learned the one thing you really cannot control is the weather. This way we won't be controlling the weather but maybe, just maybe, changing our odds.

  1. There is so much to see going that way. We went up through the four corners area and up to Moab and then to Flaming Gorge and then through WY into MT last year when we headed north. Hopefully the weather will stay as nice as it has been this winter and you won't be fighting too much snow.

  2. That's definitely a much more scenic route! We spent a couple of months in Utah last year. It's fantastic!

We're taking our chances and are planning to be in Kansas City the month of May. It could be exciting. (But, we sure hope not!)

    Enjoy your redirected travels!!!

  3. Last year I was headed to TX from IL shortly after the Joplin tornado. I took an unusual route, also. I used the weather.com Tor-Con website to plan my travels each morning. I agree that we can't control the weather. I have been in temps from 90 to 32 this week and have only moved about 200 miles.

  4. Super! Depending on when you depart, consider US 60, US 93 (with a side trip on AZ 89 to North Ranch) then back to US 93 to Kingman. Go east to Williams, and take the Grand Canyon train ride to the South rim....Or, go west then north through Las Vegas then up into Utah....We'll have to really look at the map and plan our trip accordingly as well! How to get east without experiencing a tornado...?!
