REVIEW OF BONNY BAY CAMP ON LAKE WABIGOON NEAR DRYDEN ONTARIO CANADA

Currently in Belton MO (Low 62 Clouds and Breaks of Sun High 83)

As previously mentioned in earlier blog postings about Bob's recent postings he has been going to Canada off and on since 1982, the last one before this trip was 2009. Bonny Bay Camp(link) is probably the best fishing camp that Bob has been too.

Admittedly his perspective was 1980/1990s cabins but he was amazed at the 2020s amenities. From electricity with no limits and running water in the cabins for daily showers if desired, and a microwave. Add to that wifi, yeah wifi, in a cabin 205km (127.4 miles) from the border. Completing the great experience is that T-Mobile is everywhere. Getting texts and phone calls on a remote lake in Canada was amazing to say the least.

Here is our cabin, #6.

Cabin #6 is one of their larger cabins and while Cabins #7 and #8 have satellite TV #6 has the much better view from the deck.

We really didn't miss the TV as the trip was all about fishing. The kitchen was equipped nicely including the aforementioned microwave (yeah a microwave!)

It is a 3 bedroom cabin that sleeps 8.

Every Tuesday night Bonny Bay Camp serves a meal to all visitors. It was really good with a dessert table to be envied.

The best equipped dock that Bob has ever seen.

Lake Wabigoon is a very scenic lake.

You cannot do wrong visiting Bonny Bay Camp, great cabins, great owners, great dock hands on a lake that has a great number of species to catch with trophy Muskie, Northern, Walleye possible.

Till next time,

WILL THIS BE BOB'S CANADA FISHING 'LAST HURRAH'

Currently in Belton MO (Low 45 Sunny and Pleasant High 77)

Bob began going to fish in Canada in 1982. His dad's friend had a cabin on Eagle Lake in Ontario that we were able to use for Bob's first trip fishing ever to Canada. Bob's wife at the time Pat joined friends Mark and Margaret and Bob's friend from college Mike (aka QB).

On the drive up we had to stop and take pictures at the only gas station every designed by Frank Lloyd Wright located in Cloquet Minnesota. Bob met Pat at Iowa State where she was an architecture student. After our marriage she transferred to KU in architecture engineering. Pat was really interested in this stop and took a lot of pictures. Here's one from the web (notice the cantilevered structure over the pumps):

Bob's dad was at the cabin fishing with his friends (aka "The Boys) from WWII the week before our trip. So after our stop in Cloquet we drove to the border in International Falls. His dad's friends had drove him to our side of the border and we picked him up at gas station where we filled our tanks before crossing the border. We had a great time at Eagle Lake, so much that Bob tried to get to Canada fishing every year, sometimes twice, including one flyin trip, for a number of years.

Forty-three years later we have gotten a lot older and life has intervened such that we may not be taking any more trips. Bob has not been fishing in Canada since 2009, just before we began fulltiming in our RV and traveling the country. Bob was joined by his friends Mark, yes the Mark from 1982, and Gerry whose first trip was Bob's 2009 trip. He has been going with Mark since 2009, Bob's last trip before this and Gerry's first trip. We drove by the Frank Lloyd Wright's gas station and it is still standing completing the circle of trips that started in 1982.

We are staying at Bonny Bay Camp and we've got a great cabin in a great location overlooking the lake. The cabins are better built than most of the cabins Bob stayed at during his previous visits. The cabins have electricity, indoor plumbing, wifi, heck this one even has a microwave, albeit no TV. Here is a sunset that we saw from our cabin.

The first fish pic we took was of a smallmouth bass caught by Gerry, his personal best.

We will do a future blog with just fish pictures in the future and a Bonny Bay Camp review but here are a couple fishing pictures. First one is the biggest Northern Bob caught this trip.

Mark's personal best walleye caught in Canada.

This may or may not be Bob's 'Last Hurrah' as it will be decided on a yearly basis, but every trip is always a great time.

Till next time,

Bob and Jo
